Scrubs TV Show

July 31, 2008

This half- hour comedy drama was created by Bill Lawrence. The series focused on the eccentric experiences of a medical intern John “J.D” who starts his career in a surreal hospital. Scrubs TV Show offered a view of life in a big-city hospital through the eyes of a group of interns fresh out of medical school.

Hospital’s environment is full fun because of unpredictable staffers and patients-where humor and tragedy can merge paths at any time. JD in addition to deflecting the patronizing comments of the doctors also had to deal with the situations brought out by two fellow interns: JD’s best friend Chris Turk and the beautiful and driven Elliot Reid. Other important roles in this show are: The fatherly chief of medicine, Dr. Bob Kelso; Dr. Perry Cox; and the caring but slightly tired nurse Carla Espinosa. The hospital janitor also tries to catch every opportunity to harass his target. The major reason that takes the show near to reality is that Scrubs is filmed in a real life hospital. It’s the North Hollywood Medical Centre, which has gone under various constructions to fit all the equipment and represent Sacred Heart Hospital. Scrubs was planned to have introduced on September 25, 2001, but coverage of the World Trade Center disaster moved the premiere date to October 2.

Reaper TV Show

July 31, 2008

In an era distinguished by popular TV series in which the heroes are the villains (The Sopranos, The Shield), it should surprise no one that the most charming and likeable character in the CW comedy-drama series Reaper was the Devil Himself. The story got under way when 20-year-old slacker Sam Oliver (Bret Harrison), one of the least stellar employees at his local Work Bench home-improvement store, finally found out why his parents (Allison Hossack, Andrew Arlie) had always allowed him to goof off and drift aimlessly through life while simultaneously demanding so much from his overachieving kid brother Keith (Kyle Switzer).

It turned out that Mom and Dad felt guilty about selling Sam’s soul to the Devil (Ray Wise), before the boy had even been born. Once Sam turned 21, up popped the Devil again, demanding that our hero immediately go to work for him–or else. Sam’s new job was as a Satanic “bounty hunter”, tracking down and recapturing souls who’d managed to escape from Hell. Since the people whom Sam hunted down richly deserved eternal damnation, and since the immacuately-dressed Devil was such a warm, personable guy, Sam found his new assignment a lot more stimulating than his customary duties at the Work Bench. He even managed to enlist his best friends and coworkers Sock (Tyler Labine) and Ben (Rick Gonzalez) as his helpers, and to persuade Sock’s ex-girlfriend, paralegal Josie (Valarie Rae Miller), to do the necessary research work on each “fallen demon”. At the same time, Sam had to keep his “mission” a secret from his earthly boss Ted (Donovan Stinson) and his erstwhile girlfriend Andi (Missy Peregrym). Making its CW debut on September 25, 2007, Reaper played like an unholy alliance between Faust and Clerks–hardly surprising, since the series was coproduced by Clerks creator Kevin Smith.

Psych TV Show

July 31, 2008

The weekly, hour-long detective dramedy Psych made its USA network bow on July 7, 2006, right after the fifth-season opener of the thematically similar Monk. James Roday starred as Shawn Spencer, the genial “slacker” son of no-nonsense police officer Henry Spencer (Corbin Bernsen). Relentlessly trained from an early age to recognize the smallest and most minute clues at a given crime scene, Shawn developed a photographic memory, which he generally used to coast through life and avoid honest work. Hoping to gain a bit of prestige as a police consultant, Henry made the mistake of providing so much “inside” evidence that at one point he was accused of being a perpetrator.

In his efforts to wriggle out of this dilemma, Shawn managed to convince the authorities that he possessed psychic powers (which he most certainly did not), and as such became a permanent “troubleshooter” for the Santa Barbera police department, answerable to interim police chief Karen Vick (Kristen Nelson) — who, luckily, was an old friend of Shawn’s father. Grudgingly partnered with our hero was hard-bitten detective Carlton Lassiter (Timothy Omundson), who harbored serious doubts about Shawn’s psychic prowess, and Lassiter’s co-worker Juliet O’Hara (Maggie Lawson), a gung-ho, ebullient type who believed every word that Shawn said. Also on hand was Shawn’s best friend and confidante, Gus (Dulé Hill), an overcautious type who resented being continually thrust into harm’s way, but who couldn’t hide his fascination with various aspects of crime and crime-solving. In a clever directorial gimmick, viewers at home “saw” and “memorized” the various clues in each episode through Shawn’s eyes, via freeze-frame and zoom lens. A few episodes of Psych were seen on the over-the-air NBC network beginning July 14, 2006.

King of The Hill

July 31, 2008

Created by Beavis and Butt-Head’s Mike Judge and The Simpsons’ Greg Daniels, the weekly, half-hour animated series King of the Hill was a genial “redneck” comedy set in the fictional burg of Arlen, TX. The central character was Hank Rutherford Hill, a 40-year-old salesman for the Strickland Propane Company. Staunchly conservative and fiercely macho, Hank might have been described as the head of the Hill household were it not for his iron-willed wife Peggy, a substitute teacher. Also living under Hank Hill’s roof was his 12-year-old son Bobby, an overweight underachiever who was never quite able to live up to Hank’s lofty standards of manhood; and Hank and Peggy’s niece Luane Platter, who’d been living with the Hills since her trailer-park mom killed her dad during a brouhaha over “that last beer.”

Hank spent most of his spare time hanging out with his good ol’ boy buddies, among them rabid conspiracy theorist Dale Gribble (whose wife Nancy was cheating on her husband with a Native American masseuse named John Redcorn, who in turn was the real father of the Gribbles’ son Joseph); Bill Dauterive, a divorced barber who worked on a nearby military post; and self-styled Lothario, Boomhauer, who never spoke when muttering incomprehensibly would do. Also in the neighborhood was a Laotian couple, Kahn and Minh Souphanosuinphone, whose daughter Connie was Bobby’s best friend. It would have been distressingly easy to poke derisive fun at the Southern-fried characters and their knee-jerk attitudes, but the producers displayed a touching fondness for the follies and foibles of the Hills and their friends, and in so doing imbued King of the Hill with a warmth and depth often lacking in prime-time cartoon shows. Debuting January 12, 1997, the Emmy-winning King of the Hill was second only to The Simpsons as the Fox network’s most successful and longest-running animated series.
