Dancing with the Stars is all about ‘firsts.’  Every season has a slew of ‘em, and last night we saw the first time contestants undertook the difficult paso doble or rumba this early in the competition. *golf claps*  Well, it may not be the first time someone fainted (Hi, Marie!), but it’ll do.

First up, Toni Braxton and her partner Alec performed the rumba.  Sporting another sparse outfit, Toni has fully embraced the mantra of the ballroom: Less is more except when it comes to sparkles.  The judges were happy with Toni’s showing but warned her to work on the basics.  The theatrics can only carry her so far, and they surely didn’t prevent Carrie Ann from spying two lifts within the number and bumping Toni and Alec’s total score down to 23.

Up next was one of the few couples who could have followed Toni and not be set up to fail, Brooke Burke and her partner Derek.  Brooke continued her streak of hits with the paso doble, impressing the judges and making every mom in America feel like a servere underachiever.  Carrie Ann offered up a bit of advice for next week, telling Brooke to work on her unbalanced holds.  Nevertheless, Brooke secured the top score of the night with a 24.

Chef Rocco DiSpirito is seriously getting cuter every week.  He’s being very sweet to Karina (who probably needs it after dating that twerp and sore loser, Mario Lopez) but had a hard time channeling all his ‘Italian emotions’ into the rumba.  To prove to Karina that he is passionate, Rocco whipped up a little somethin’ somethin’ in the kitchen for her (I smell romance!).  But, as Samantha Harris so eloquently said, maybe they should have spent more time in the ballroom than the kitchen.  Rocco’s lack of musicality landed him with a low score of 16.

Lance Bass and partner Lacey (who totally looks like a cross between Carrie Underwood and Khloe Kardashian, no?) paso dobled to Katy Perry’s “I Kissed a Girl.”  Hmm, wouldn’t “Ur So Gay” have been the better song choice?  It was a cute dance, but Lance had to go and ruin it in the end by engaging in a super awkward lip lock with Lacey.  He looked petrified, while she appeared to be living out all her N*Sync fantasies and went for the kill.  The judges were a titch put off by the kiss, and Len wasn’t happy with the lack of traditional paso elements.  A score of 20 placed L&L in the middle of the pack.

Supposedly, Kim Kardashian’s ass-centric dance last week was one of the most watching clips online.  That definitely won’t be happening with her rumba from last night.  For someone so beautiful and good at building her image (remember when she was Paris Hilton’s closet organizer back in the day?!), Kim is completely vacant on the dance floor.  She doesn’t get into character and looks about 85% disinterested in the performance.  Girl, c’mon!  You know how to work the camera, nix the shy act!  Funnily enough, Carrie Ann suggested she watch her performances on tape in order to improve next week.  Kim and her partner Mark took home a score of 17 for the night.

Not a tough act to follow, but Misty Mae-Treanor would’ve blown just about anybody out the water.  After shedding a few tears of frustration in rehearsals, Misty bounced back with vigor.  Her costume choices were questionable, but her dancing definitely was not.  She still needs to work on bringing down her shoulders and shaking that deer-in-headlights look she has going on, but regardless, this was a great paso doble.  Misty and Maks raked in a 21.

Maurice Greene is a lot of talk but no action when it comes to rehearsing or performing.  His routine with Cheryl was so boring, I can’t hardly remember a thing about it other than it was very stiff.  What happened to Cheryl being the professional to be paired with?!  I’ll talk a Hough sibling or Maks any day!  A score of 19 seemed a bit generous compared to Misty’s 21.

She’s baaack!  Cloris Leachman and her partner Corky vowed to get out from the bottom of the leaderboard this week.  Unfortunately, their paso doble simply didn’t have enough content to warrant them a higher score than 15.  Cloris started off with real promise but things tapered off into Corky tossing her around like a body bag.  Cloris did, however, shine with her solo spins.  And heck, girlfriend is 82!  I hope I can strap on a wig and high heels and twirl around when I’m that age.

And I have to admit, I love, love, love that Cloris doesn’t cut Samantha any slack. Watch for it.

Moving on to soap star Susan Lucci.  I’m just gonna say it: I don’t know how much longer I can handle the phony enthusiasm as she teeters around on those little legs and squints at me with her badly Botoxed eye (just the right one!).  Nothing went on in her rumba dance, so I’m not quite sure what the judges were looking at to be able to award her a score of 21.  Misty got a 21!  Yeesh.

Thankfully, Warren Sapp was up next to redeem the night.  Decked out in pleather and sequins, Warren and his  partner Kym paso dobled into the judges good graces and grabbed three 8s, tying for the best score of the night with Brooke Burke.  Len thought their dance had a lovely, dark and menacing feeling to it.  They did a climactic cascade walk down the center of the ballroom that was so good you forgot Warren is ginormous!

Rounding out the night, youngster Cody Linley and his partner Julianne rumbad to a 21, landing in a three-way tie for third place. Bruno said Cody needs to learn control; the talent is there he just needs to focus.  Overall, the dance lacked a little bit of polish but with Julianne dancing, it’s easy to get caught up in paying attention to only her.
