Dancing with the Stars: (Episode 706)
In one quick snap, Misty Mae Treanor’s promising stint on Dancing with the Stars has come to an end. Rehearsing the jive with partner Maks on Friday, Misty’s Achilles tendon ruptured, leaving her unable to compete and in need of surgery. In spite of the pain, Misty hobbled back into the ballroom last night to make an in-person exit announcement while the other contestants looked on in sympathy.
But c’mon, all niceties aside, you know every one of the remaining nine couples are breathing a sigh of relief! Misty was a serious threat. What will be interesting tonight is how the show handles the unexpected loss: Don’t make a cut this week? Reenlist an eliminated contestant? Welcome back, Kim Kardashian!
Despite all the uncertainty, Susan Lucci put on her perky face and kicked things off last night. As she shuffled her way through a blundering jive, Susan looked like she had swiped one of Misty’s painkillers! Tony guided her through most of the choreography, and I definitely noticed two solid missteps. The male judges, however, couldn’t seem to tear their eyes away from Susan’s chest (grossly pushed up into two distinct entities on top of her polka dot dress) and left the real judging to Carrie Ann. Who, thankfully, noted Susan’s lack of authority. Susan and Tony walked away with a score of 21.
Lance Bass and partner Lacey decided to shelf the rebellion for a night and show the judges they could take on the traditional Viennese waltz. In order to trial run the judges’ reactions, L&L testing their waltz out at a local retirement home. Lacey let her true colors shine when one resident inquired about Cloris Leachman, saying, “After the show’s over, I’m sure she’s coming here.” Ouch.
The judges were divided over L&L’s performance. While Bruno commented on Lance’s heavy feet, Carrie Ann thought the dance was fantastic. A score of 22 landed L&L in third place.
After last week’s restricted rumba, track star Maurice Greene had to shrug off the low scores and come back strong … or risk going home. Partner Cheryl worked hard to perfect Maurice’s footwork and it paid off; his jive was precise and full of energy. More importantly, he earned rave reviews and a score of 24.
With Misty and Maks out, this duo is definitely on the way to becoming my favorite of the season. Chef Rocco DiSpirito and his partner Karina stepped out of the box in rehearsals this week, using a blindfold technique to find Rocco’s inner musicality. I could just eat Rocco up with a spoon he’s so cute! And I love that he’s bringing out a gentler side of Karina. (Of course, I hope they’re secretly dating. I love a good in-season romance!)
Len said there were elements of Rocco’s Viennese waltz that were lovely, but Bruno wasn’t as kind, calling the waltz a light mousse and Rocco mashed potatoes. A score of 20 placed Rocco and Karina above only Cloris and Corky for the night.
Back from his high-scoring paso doble last week, Warren Sapp did a 180 to take on the soft and romantic Viennese waltz. Once again combating his commanding stature, Warren did an incredible job. He embraced the smooth character of the waltz to the same degree he embodied the forceful paso–a trait the judges endlessly praised him for. A score of 25 marks Warren and Kym’s best score yet and a second-place finish for the night.
The jive proved to be a test in control and concentration for the ADD-prone Cody Linley. He started off great, but lost the judges midway through with a combination of air guitar on Julianne’s leg and counting steps aloud to himself. Regardless, Cody has proven again this week that he has the talent, he just needs to keep on polishing his performance. A score of 21 tied Cody with Susan on the leaderboard.
Is Toni Braxton teetering on the verge of scary skinny? I don’t remember her being this thin back in the “Unbreak My Heart” days! Hiding behind an elaborate costume, she and partner Alec took a big risk with a dramatic and stylized Viennese waltz. Bruno and Len were not fans, saying Toni doesn’t need all the theatrics, whereas Carrie Ann loved its throwback to the Viennese waltz’s scandalous origins. A score of 22 edged Toni and Alec out of the “winner, winner chicken dinner” pack (aka 21-point couples).
Cloris Leachman and partner Corky are two birds of a feather. A very weird feather. I have no idea what Corky was thinking with that choreography! Simulating farts?! Creepy, contorted faces?! Bruno summed it up by saying all the psychiatrists in the world wouldn’t be able to analyze what that dance meant. A score of 16 was extremely generous, and I think Cloris needs to bow out before she begins to make a fool of herself.
Brooke Burke and partner Derek Hough butted heads this week. Derek seemed to have forgotten that despite Brooke’s talent, she’s still his student and can’t be expected to perform things she is not properly taught. Showing grace under pressure, Brooke pulled though with another perfect dance. So impressive was her Viennese waltz, Carrie Ann dubbed Brooke her favorite dancer of the bunch, and Len took it a step further saying this was his favorite dance of the season. Scooping up the first 10 of the season, Brooke and Derek topped the charts with a 28.
