Smother
By
Director: Vince Di Meglio
Stars: Dax Shepard, Liv Tyler, Diane Keaton
Studio: Variance Films
The Plot: After he’s fired from his job, an everyday guy (Shepard) faces pressure from his wife (Tyler) to have a baby and from his mom (Keaton), who has decided to move in with the young couple after leaving her husband.

THE BUZZ: Vince Di Meglio found moderate success last year as the co-writer of License to Wed, which he penned with Tim Rasmussen, who is the co-writer/producer of Smother. Di Meglio also slides into the director’s chair here, but the buzz is quiet for this comedy, so you might not hear much about it until its DVD release. Cool-looking poster, though — not bad for the first big release from Variance Films, which is employing a more targeted release strategy for indie movies. Here’s an interesting, brief article on the fledgling studio.
