(S07E04) “Cut off the head and the tentacles get frisky – it’s a risk.” – Vic
Things are starting to heat up in the Mexican/Armenian feud! While it still astonishes me that neither Pezuela nor Rezian seem to realize how they’re being played so perfectly by Vic, I’m still in awe of the entire situation. Vic has got each them believing his lies so fully that it finally pushed Pezuela to go as far as burning two of Rezian’s lieutenants alive. Not that Pezuela hasn’t killed before, but c’mon – Vic is good. Realistically, that’s two less people who know about the money train hit.
It’s a huge mess and even though we’re seeing glimmers of an end game, I think it’s safe to say that it won’t be that easy. Credit to Shawn Ryan and Co. for giving us The Shield that long-time fans are accustomed to. Four episodes into the final season and it’s clear Ryan didn’t reinvent the wheel, which is why I know that fooling Rezian and Pezuela can’t be this easy for much longer.
One of the hallmarks of The Shield over these seven seasons has been the way Vic and The Strike Team’s adventures are always juxtaposed against Dutch, Claudette, and Billings working on, you know – “normal” police work. Dutch has nabbed some great cases in the past, but it’s always the ones that don’t seem like much that end up toying with his… what did Steve call it? The Wagenbach Freak Meter?
Watching Dutch mentally dissect Lloyd Denton’s answers and deduce that the kid was a serial killer in the making was mesmerizing and even though Lloyd apparently got away with murder this time, seeing Dutch all bunched up was too good for it to be over. I can only hope that he gets to nail Lloyd by series end. It’ll be his “cherry on top of his career sundae.” That kid didn’t flinch once. It was creepy.
Back to Vic. Another thing that I’m really loving about this season is the way that he’s being pulled in so many directions. Dealing with the department and his job, Rezian, Pezuela, and his family. That dynamic has always existed in some way, shape, or form in the past, but it’s especially prevalent this season. Adding in Danny’s decision to strip Vic of his parental rights to Lee is going to complicate matters even more. I can’t blame her though. After seeing how Cassidy is turning out, it doesn’t exactly speak highly of Vic’s parenting skills.
More thoughts…
- I had always wondered if we’d see city comptroller Robert Martin again, especially after he wasn’t able to help Vic. Guess we’ll never see him again since Pezuela’s goon killed him. That being said, it was a bit convenient that he was in the blackmail box and that’s my biggest issue with it. It’s the black hole of plots. Whatever you need “could” be in there.
- I hope we get some more on Julian’s homosexuality. I know Tina found out about it last season (at least, I think she did) and I just hope there’s more to it. His “first year Strike Team enthusiasm” just doesn’t feel like the same character.
- I still think Cassidy is going to end up playing a much bigger role this season. She was able to dig up info from newspapers (the internet too I imagine) on Kavanaugh and what he thought Vic had done to Terry. Wouldn’t it be something if she visited him in jail? And she carried on his crusade to bring Vic down? Probably not, but there has got to be an end game for her rebelliousness.
And of course, the final big bombshell was Aceveda realizing that Olivia was in the blackmail box. Again with the “black hole” issue. However, I’m more accepting of this because it was clearly why she was brought into the fold in the first place, to keep an eye on Vic for Pezuela. However, Vic has certainly won her over. It’ll just be a matter of how bad Cruz’s dirt on her is. But as Vic said, she knows enough to get both him and Aceveda killed. She might see that intel as a way to free herself.
